Director of Housing & Education
Avis Lam is the Director of Housing & Education at Aunt Leah’s, where she leads housing programs and education advocacy to support both current and former youth from care.
With a strong commitment to helping young people transition to safe, stable homes and meaningful education, Avis focuses on career planning, advocating for educational access, and creating supportive resources for youth navigating housing challenges.
Before stepping into her current role, Avis served at Aunt Leah’s as the Education Coordinator for 10 years. Prior to this, she worked as a Multicultural Youth Worker in the Delta School District.
Avis holds a degree in Social Work from the University of Victoria and has completed additional training in Trauma-Informed Care, Human Trafficking, and Anti-Racism, which continue to inform her work. She has many volunteer and work experiences supporting diverse communities and values the learning each has offered. As a mother of a neurodivergent tween, Avis brings a deep understanding of diverse learning and support needs, a perspective that enriches her inclusive and compassionate approach. She recognizes that advocacy and parenting are both ongoing journeys of growth and learning, and she is committed to continually deepening her understanding. Passionate about social justice in child and youth welfare, Avis brings this commitment to every aspect of her role.
Outside of her professional life, Avis enjoys spending time with family, staying in touch with current events and watching documentaries about global affairs, as well as cheering on her favourite baseball team, the Seattle Mariners. She believes that every young person deserves both a place to call home and access to educational opportunities that unlock their potential.
